ALAMEDA NAVAL AIR STATION
portfolio
Rejecting the agenda of a relentlessly negative mainstream media, Oaktown surveys a habitually unembraced landscape as created and recreated by the town's people themselves. Its camera attends to the denied, the disappeared, the transformed, the ephemeral, the ambient, the subliminal, or the colloquial, which has always been on display.

Photography, Curating, Writing, Organization Development
Malcolm Ryder is a photographer and writer based in Oakland, California. His career as a photographer started in 1972 at Princeton University, where, with no photography degree being offered, he created an independent major in visual studies. Ryder then built a photography business in New Jersey and New York City before becoming an arts funding program developer for the National Endowment for the Arts, the NY Foundation for the Arts, and the NY State Council on the Arts. In 1989 he moved to San Francisco and then Oakland, building a second career as a software executive and management consultant. Today he practices street photography with his Samsung Galaxy smartphones, roaming roads and corners of Oakland determined to capture a neglected essence of a mostly misunderstood city. He edits a magazine for alumni of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and curates Oaktown.pictures, Artdotdot.com and PAX.institute. www.malcolmryder.com
